IAQ and Sick Building Syndrome: why indoor air quality is no longer negligible

Did you know that 90% of the population spends most of their time indoors? Homes, offices, schools, gyms, public spaces: we are immersed in indoor environments for most of the day, yet we rarely stop to reflect on the quality of the air we breathe inside them.

IAQ — Indoor Air Quality, or air quality in buildings, is today a central issue for people's health, well-being and productivity. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. Pollutants from the external environment - such as fine dust, pollen, gases - infiltrate and remain trapped in closed environments, where they are added to those generated inside: CO₂, volatile organic compounds (VOC), humidity, mold, allergens, kitchen fumes and cleaning products.

This invisible mix can have major health consequences. Among the main effects of indoor pollution:

  • Respiratory system disorders (asthma, bronchitis, irritations)
  • Immune system suffering
  • Cardiovascular and nervous system problems
  • Decreased ability to concentrate and increased mental fatigue

 

According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is the main environmental risk factor for the health of the global population.

 

The Sick Building Syndrome

In this context, an increasingly studied phenomenon is inserted: the Sick Building Syndrome. It is a group of physical and psychological symptoms that occur in a diffuse way among the occupants of a building and that tend to improve or disappear moving away from it. The most common symptoms include:

  • Recurrent headaches
  • Eye, nose and throat irritations
  • Chronic tiredness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Nausea and vertigo

The root cause? Insufficient or no ventilation, together with the accumulation of pollutants and other environmental factors such as humidity, poor lighting or the presence of toxic materials.
